If they need really longer work then I put the work onto my calender. And everything else is immediately removed from the inbox. So there is only a few items left. What I cannot get done when proceeding to current/next project I move to the action folder (as mentioned above). I do similar - emails that need a next action are moved into the action folder if they are not processed immediately - and I do look into email only if I am also going to process some.

If they need really longer work then I put the work onto my calender.
